In October 2017, the Town of Oakville announced a pedestrian safety program that will be implemented in steps over the coming years. One of the main segments of this program involves the installation of over 170 pedestrian crossovers.

Four of these crossovers will likely be installed by the end of March, and another eleven will be placed by the end of 2018. The remaining 150+ crossovers will be installed over the next 10-15 years.

This is an important new chapter in Oakville’s safety program, as the city is becoming more and more populated. With new developments popping up and school populations increasing, it is crucial for Oakville to be fully safe and accessible for all residents and visitors.

As InHalton reports, drivers and cyclists can proceed at crossovers only when pedestrians and school crossing guards have made it to the other side of the road. However, new rules don’t apply to pedestrian crosswalks at intersections with stop signs or traffic signals unless there’s a school crossing guard present.

Pedestrian crossovers are not the same as crosswalks. They can be found at any stretch of roadway, usually mid-block, and do not have to be located at traffic lights, stop signs, school crossings, or other intersections.

See below for the locations of the fifteen crossovers being implemented this year.
