With temperatures reaching far past 30\u00b0C and humidity rates skyrocketing, mother nature is finally signaling residents of the GTA to open up their pools. Many homes in Oakville and Mississauga feature beautiful backyard pools, great for cooling off during the summer heat. Follow these tips to make maintaining your backyard pool an easier task.<\/p>\n

Before opening your pool, clean up the patio\/concrete that surrounds it. After lots of rain, snow, and wind during the winter months, dirt and debris can collect. Clear this away and give the concrete a good scrub to avoid tracking loose dirt into the pool water.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also a great idea to trim back hedges, plants, and trees that surround your pool. Having low-hanging branches that surround your pool increases the amount of leaves\/seeds\/petals that end up in your pool, which increases the frequency at which you need to clean the pool. Prune back these branches to a reasonable length to minimize the cleanup this summer.<\/p>\n

When removing the pool cover, be sure to rinse it thoroughly. Dirt and slime can accumulate on the cover during the winter. Avoid mixing this into the pool water underneath, and give it a thorough clean with water or treatment solution. Lay out the cover on your driveway to drain the water easily. Another tip is to store your pool cover in a large plastic container: this keeps the cover from collecting dirt and prevents bugs from getting into it.<\/p>\n

Opening up your pool may reveal a few surprises. They may be as benign as a few bugs or as serious as vinyl rips or cracks. If there are any holes, rips, or tears in the lining, treat these as soon as possible. If your pool is made of gunite or fiberglass, do a thorough inspection for cracks. Though some hairline fractures may not always be a cause for concern, it is important to keep on top of things to ensure the cracks do not increase. Take pictures of cracks to track changes. Local pool stores are great resources for repairs, and, unless you feel confident in doing the repairs yourself, they are an easy and often inexpensive option.<\/p>\n
