With the summer season upon us and the end of school approaching, pool parties are right around the corner. Whether it\u2019s a quick dip to cool off or an afternoon spent splashing in the sun, it\u2019s important to remember these basic tips for pool safety, especially if you are around young children.<\/p>\n

Supervision<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kids should never be in or around the pool without an adult present. Even if they are not physically in the water, it\u2019s important to keep an eye on them \u2013 anything can happen in a split second. If you\u2019re at a busy party with lots going on, make sure there are designated adults who are responsible for watching the kids in and near the pool. That way, if you do become distracted, there will always be a second pair of eyes.<\/p>\n

No Running<\/strong><\/p>\n

It can be tempting for kids to take a running start for a cannonball or dive, but it\u2019s easy to slip on the wet surfaces around the pool. Invest in a diving board or fun pool toys to encourage your kids to have fun in a safe way that doesn\u2019t involve running around the pool. If you do have pool toys, make sure all walkways are clear of them, so nobody trips over them.<\/p>\n

Phones<\/strong><\/p>\n

Be sure to have a cell phone or cordless home phone with you while near the pool. If an emergency does happen, running inside to find a phone to call 911 wastes precious time.<\/p>\n

Safety While Not in the Pool<\/strong><\/p>\n

Many pools are fenced in with a locked gate \u2013 this is a great idea to keep children (and animals) away from the water during the off-season, or when there isn\u2019t proper supervision. According to Swimmingpool.com, experts recommend a fence that is at least four feet tall, with narrow gaps so children and animals cannot slip through.<\/p>\n

Education<\/strong><\/p>\n

Not only is it important for you and other adults to be aware of pool safety, but it\u2019s also important for your kids to understand how to stay safe while in the water. Make sure they know to find an adult or lifeguard if there\u2019s an emergency. Teaching your kids these tips will ensure for a safe, fun summer by the pool!<\/p>\n
