Spring Gardening

The key to a maintaining a beautiful garden is starting early and planning ahead. Now that spring is finally upon us, it’s time to get started!

The spring melt can leave an array of odds and ends in your yard, such as forgotten leaves from last fall, twigs, branches, pinecones, etc. Clearing this debris away not only makes your yard look better, it also allows for new growth. Grass and gardens thrive when they are clear of clutter and able to soak up as much sun and water as possible.

Once your grass is clear, aeration will maximize its potential to soak up nutrients. Right now is a great time to aerate your lawn. Aerating involves putting small holes into the soil, allowing air, water, and nutrients to penetrate deep underground. Tools for aerating are available at hardware stores and the process is quite simple. Ideally, your lawn should be aerated during the growing season, when temperatures aren’t too hot. Since the GTA got off to quite a late start this year, now’s the time to do it.

This time of year is also ideal to start preparing your gardenbeds. Certain flowers/plants grow at certain times of the year, but a great time to get your garden started is before temperatures rise. Do some research on when flowers are in bloom, and plan accordingly. This way, your garden will be flowering constantly, all summer long.

To maintain a pristine lawn and garden throughout the summer, it is important to pull weeds when they are still small. This is much easier to do than when weeds are large, because their roots are shallower and therefore easier to pull out. Pulling them before they flower also prevents them from spreading their seeds and infiltrating the rest of your garden.

Whether you start outside in the yard or inside your home, the time for spring cleaning is upon us. These simple tips are a good place to start when looking to upgrade your home’s exterior.
